Eita Izumi (泉瑛太, Izumi Eita) is a central character in the anime, who returns after leaving four years ago to reunite with old friends in high school, just before their senior year ends.

Appearance[]

Eita has wavy black hair with gray eyes.

Personality[]

Eita is best described as a charming and sensitive grouch. Beneath his seemingly impervious demeanor, he was emotionally traumatized, early in his life, by his family's moving to another town while he was in middle school because of his father's work. He has a small fixation on not standing out in a negative way in a world to which he does not feel he belongs, and he hides a profound vulnerability.

When Eita returns four years later, due to a reversal in his father's job location, he doesn't know that the friends he had to leave four years before are there, and even though he is glad to see them, his deeply internalized hurt at leaving them is now mixed with confusion at being with them in the three months they have together before high school ends. So in the show, he has almost tsundere qualities due to trying to defend his very sensitive and vulnerable heart. Defending himself is not necessary, with his old friend Haruto Sōma or other new friends, but to his shock and distress, his love for Mio Natsume, the girl he loved in middle school, has not died.

It becomes clear that Mio has also had some edges knocked off of her already, a fact that like Eita she has kept secret. Eita's and Mio's emotional trajectories have, very strangely, moved parallel. They have both lost a lot of hope in joy's appearance over the past four years, but neither one has forgotten the other, despite the fact that Mio never realized she was drawn to or depended on Eita's faithfulness and helpfulness when they were children. Mio had "loved" Eita's best friend Haruto, but clearly had a budding love for Eita, who had no way of knowing that. Eita has always assumed that his love is unrequited, so when Mio is receptive during the story, Eita is edgy due to a fear of being deceived by himself, more than by others.

That said, one of Eita's good qualities is a rock-solid appreciation and concern for friends. He can seem to be distant, but in every moment of the show, he is paying attention to those he loves.

Mio Natsume[]

Eita and Mio were friends from school before he moved. They were both on the committee and talked a lot before he moved. Mio has a promise with Eita, that he won't tell anyone about her unrequited love. Quote 'ill beat you to pulp' Eita denied remembering the promise when asked at the aquarium if he will still honor it, but it was renewed with a LINE sticker: 'tell anyone and I will kill you' he agrees later in person. Eita may still have feelings for Mio, but at the moment, he denies it as he mentioned that 'it's all in the past'

Haruto Sōma[]

Closest friend, from school before he moved. Both played baseball, Eita pitches for Haruto. They have each other's LINE contact since before he moved, continuing to message initially. Haruto knows about his 'past' feelings for Mio Natsume.

Ena Komiya[]

Ena's nickname for Eita was 'Mysterious transfer student' until she learned his name. Eita was noticeable displeasure when he found out that the person Mio Natsume wanted him to meet was Ena. Ena wants to use a photo of him, she has captured for a photography competition and is very persistent, to the point of being pesky. Ena grabs onto Eita when needed, to continue or start a conversation. Eta reluctantly give her his LINE ID, but he sets conditions (no stalking!).

Etymology[]

The name Eita means "sparkle of jewelry, crystal" (瑛) (ei) and "thick, big, great" (太) (ta).
Eita's surname Izumi means "spring, fountain" (泉).
